AMBITIOUS plans to transform Barnsley Hospital’s breast cancer services for thousands have taken a step closer - after a fundraiser surpassed the £200,000 barrier this week.

The Barnsley Hospital Charity revealed its Breast Care Appeal - the Gawber site’s most recent fundraising mission - last summer in the hope of enhancing the care the town’s patients receive.

It seeks to raise £250,000 to fund a transformation of the trust’s dedicated breast care unit, where patients are seen by specialist doctors, nurses and a radiology team for consultations, imaging assessments and biopsies.

More than 7,000 patients are seen annually in the unit with a variety of symptoms including breast lumps, nipple changes and lumps in the armpit.

This equates to around 142 patients per week and, of those, an average of around 250 breast cancer patients are treated annually.

Ongoing appointments with breast care nurses, prosthetic experts and doctors also take place within this unit.

Although extremely rare in males, men who are battling the disease will also benefit from the scheme.

Stephanie Peacock, MP for Barnsley South, visited the hospital last Friday and praised the ‘brilliant work’ done by the unit.

She said: “I was really pleased to visit the unit at Barnsley Hospital recently.

“The appeal has been hugely successful over the past year and it is testament to the generosity of the Barnsley community that so much has been raised by so many people.

“I was pleased to pay tribute to the brilliant work that they do in Parliament.

“The unit sees over 7,000 patients per year.

“The Breast Care Appeal will support the transformation of Barnsley’s dedicated unit, which will create a state-of-the-art space for women to receive the very best care locally.”

Almost 2,000 people have supported the campaign since its June launch and it’s anticipated that the target could even be reached by its first anniversary.

Charity development manager Jane Mills added: “The campaign has seen overwhelming community support.

“From shark dives to sky dives and everything in between, supporters across Barnsley have shown remarkable dedication.

“All this has demonstrated the heart and passion behind the appeal.

“The vision is to create a healing, patient-focused environment, offering comfort, dignity, and support from the moment of diagnosis through recovery and beyond.

“We envision a space where sensitivity is at the heart of every detail.

“From serene, nature-inspired waiting areas to thoughtful design that prioritises privacy and calm, our goal is to transform not just the environment but the experience.”
