A MURAL depicting Barnsley Football Club’s greatest ever day is well underway after fans helped raise £4,000 in less than a fortnight.
The mural of Barnsley legends Neil Redfearn and Clint Marcelle celebrating after reaching the Premier League is currently being painted on a wall on the Bala Street newsagents.
Fan group Tykes Union launched the fundraiser in association with Eyup and Darn, Barnsley on Tour, Grimey Reds, Athersley Reds and Barnsley FC News and Now.
Club partner Parliament has designed the mural and scaffolding has been provided free of charge by the Lighting Elite Group.
It is 13-year-old Ethan Hadfield’s idea and the youngster has certainly had some backing from fans.
He told the Chronicle: “I started Tykes Union because I wanted to create something special at Oakwell.
“As me and my family are big Barnsley supporters I came up with the idea for the football mural.
“I’ve done some research on other clubs and they all had murals so I thought it would be good for Barnsley as a community.
“It’s something to be proud of.
“We are all Barnsley and I am proud of our town and club.”
