BARNSLEY Woolley Miners made it two wins from two at the start of the season, with a match-winning ton from Pakistani star Ali Zaryab, but are not getting carried away as they focus on promotion at the end of the year.
The Shaw Laners triumphed in the final over at Coal Aston so have made a positive start after relegation last season.
Captain Boeta Beukes said: “It couldn’t have gone any better so far.
“But we’re not getting carried away. It’s so early in the season and lots can change. We just want to keep the momentum going and keep doing the right things. It was really exciting to win in the last over and there is a lot of confidence in the team now.”
Zaryab carried his bat with 131 not out off 140 balls as Barnsley chased 256 with seven wickets and three balls left.
The Pakistani batter hit 13 fours and two sixes and shared a stand of 185 with Beukes (82) after Lucas Slatter had taken three wickets.
Beukes said: “It was a great win.
“It was a nice run-chase which gives us confidence. We got 288 last game so to chase 250 shows we are getting in high-scoring positions. Ali batted brilliantly and it was nice for me to have that partnership with him. We kept wickets in hand then accelerated at the end.”
Zaryab had scored 81 on his debut the previous week.
Beukes said: “He’s very high quality. He can bat all day and he’s shown that in Pakistan. He takes his time but he has patience and composure.
“It’s a great addition to hopefully help us get promoted this season.
“He’s a different player to the overseas players we’ve had in the past who were more attacking but he’s what we need after we struggled to bat long last season.
“We have good young lads who can bat around him.”
