Outgoing Barnsley head coach Conor Hourihane believes Reyes Cleary and Patrick Kelly ‘are worth a few quid’ but adds there will be many different factors as to whether they move on from Oakwell this summer.
Winger Cleary - who has the joint most assists in the EFL - and Northern Ireland international midfielder Kelly have been two of the Reds’ star men this season and, aged 22 and 21 with three years left on their deals including options, are both expected to be of interest to other clubs in the summer.
Hourihane has left his role by mutual consent with the search for his replacement continuing as negotiations are thought to be ongoing with a candidate.
On Kelly and Cleary, Hourihane told the Chronicle: “I’d imagine there’ll be some speculation because they’re both really good players. I’m not sure who the new manager is, but if he wants to play, for example, a five at the back, it’s going to be hard to fit Reyes in.
“I think it’s going to come down to loads of bits and pieces come the summertime. What does the new manager want? Do they see Reyes as a big part of what’s going forward because of formation? There’s loads of context around whether he’ll be here or not next year.
“I’d imagine that he’ll be a big part of it. But I’m not kind of privy to those conversations anymore.
“But what I will say is the way that they’ve developed, Patrick and Reyes particularly, has been a huge positive for the club. And they’re worth a few quid, that’s for sure.”
