POLICE are warning Barnsley residents to be wary of romance fraud.
Romance fraudsters create fake profiles and catfish their victims with stolen images.
They convince people to part with personal info and often, money.
Almost £1m was stolen from residents in South Yorkshire last year.
A police spokesperson said: “Our fraud team is urging the public to remain cautious when forming relationships online and to be alert to warning signs.
“Visit Stop! Think Fraud for more information on types of fraud and ways to protect yourself from them.
“If you suspect fraud or have sent money to someone you’re now suspicious of, call 159 to speak to your bank.
“This is a national hotline which most banks have signed up to.
“It’s important to remember that romance fraud is never the victim’s fault.”
