There are fears a move to ban public drinking on nearly 100 streets on the edge of the town centre could end up as a blanket alcohol ban.
Police have made the application on 96 streets in Oakwell, Old Mill, Honeywell and Dearne Valley Park amid concerns that a town centre ban has pushed drinkers into the suburbs.
Consultation is now taking place on the plan, which would allow police to seize and dispose of open cans and bottle or booze from anyone drinking in a public place and fine those who refuse to hand them over.
It follows Barnsley Council's licensing board's approval for a public drinking ban across the entire Stairfoot ward, which covers parts of Wombwell, Kendray and Ardsley.
