A round-up of some Barnsley FC related stories.
MIXED FORTUNES FOR LOANEES
ONE BARNSLEY loanee won at Wembley this week and another missed out on a trip to the national stadium.
Andy Dallas started for Southend United who beat Wealdstone 4-2 on penalties in the FA Trophy final.
That was hours after it was announced he would be released by Barnsley for whom he played five times in 2023 before being loaned out to five different clubs. He has scored 17 goals for National League Southend this season.
Meanwhile, Jackson Smith crashed out of the League Two play-offs with Grimsby Town.
The Mariners, trailing 2-1 from the home leg, lost 4-3 on aggregate at Salford City in the semi-final on Friday after extra-time. The 24-year-old, who played 36 games on loan, has two years remaining on his Reds contract.
CHANGES TO SPENDING RULES
THE EFL have announced changes to League One’s Salary Cap Management Protocol.
The percentage of turnover that clubs can spend on wages will reduce from 60 to 50 while clubs coming down from the Championship can spend 65 per cent, down from 75.
Now just 50 per cent of equity injections from owners can be spent on wages, to encourage investment in other areas of clubs.
Barnsley chief executive Jon Flatman said: “We welcome the move from the clubs in League One to take clear and obvious steps towards financial sustainability.
“Delivering a league-wide collaborative solution is essential and this will allow clubs to ensure they remain competitive on the field and financially stable off the field.
“The reliance on increasing owner funding has been highlighted by the Independent Football Regulator as a risk for the game to address; the detail of which I outlined in late March to fans.
“A focus upon growing the financial stability of clubs will result in being able to ultimately invest more in facilities, academies, infrastructures, and their playing squads.”
EX-RED WAITS ON ENGLAND SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT
ENGLAND’S squad for this summer’s World Cup is due to be announced on Friday with Barnsley man John Stones hoping to be selected for a sixth major tournament.
The Thurlstone man, who will turn 32 next week, was on the bench for Manchester City’s FA Cup final win over Chelsea on Saturday.
Defender Stones – who began his career at Oakwell – has 87 England caps, having been to three European Championships and two World Cups. He is due to leave City at the end of the season.
Thomas Tuchel is due to name his squad on Friday for the tournament in USA, Mexico and Canada which starts on June 10.
FORMER RED MANN HAS DIED
Former Barnsley player Jimmy Mann has died at the age of 73.
The former Leeds youngster spent eight years at Bristol City, making more than 200 appearances and helping them to the top flight. But he was one of eight players who agreed to cancel their contracts when the club ran into financial difficulties and moved to Norman Hunter’s Barnsley in February 1982. The midfielder played 15 times for the Reds before moving on to Scunthorpe and Doncaster.
