An investigation is underway after two fire-fighters became trapped above a burning building following a mechanical failure on a fire engine.

The men, from Barnsley station, were tackling a serious blaze at the former workingmen's club on Farm Road in Kendray.

The officers were left badly shaken after the aerial platform on the combined aerial rescue pump froze while they were high above the flames using a hose reel jet.

The pair were trapped for some time and eventually a ladder had to be put up to the platform so they could escape.

They were two of about 30 officers who tackled the fire at the disused Farm Road WMC early last Tuesday.

John Gilliver, chairman of the Fire Brigade Union said: "My view is that they (aerial platform vehicles) should all be taken off the run until a full investigation has taken place.

"They are a vital part of equipment, the tools of our trade, and without them we can't do our job.

"If in your tool box you had a faulty tool, you would get rid of it and replace it with something else that can do the job.

"It's not safe -they need to be got shut of really."

Barnsley station manager Jon Parkes said an incident with the combined aerial rescue pump was being investigated but could not comment any further.
