BARNSLEY are expecting to make their first signings of the summer in the next week.
The transfer window has now been open for almost two weeks with the Reds yet to announce an incoming signing.
The players returned for pre-season at Oakwell on Wednesday of this week, meeting new head coach Daniel Stendel who began his second stint in the role last week.
It was the first time they began pre-season without a new arrival for the first team since Stendel’s first spell in 2018 when they had a far more complete squad having just been relegated from the Championship.
But the Chronicle understands several deals are progressing well and, although not finalised as of Thursday afternoon, could be concluded in the coming days – most likely next week.
They are all thought to be permanent deals for a mix of overseas and domestic-based targets.
Barnsley have been strongly linked with Australian winger Clayton Taylor from Newcastle Jets.
Ex-Red Jacob Brown is not thought to be one of the batch of imminent arrivals but the Reds came close to bringing him back in the January window and Stendel is thought to be an admirer after they worked together at Oakwell in 2018 and 2019.
Barnsley are hoping for a positive week ahead after several departures last week then a quieter period in the last few days.
Adam Phillips’ sale to Bradford City was confirmed on Friday as was the sale of goalkeeper Jackson Smith to Port Vale.
Last year’s top-scorer David McGoldrick moved to Mansfield Town after turning down a new contract at Oakwell.
The Reds are expected to bring in at least two forwards – as they currently only have 20-year-old Leo Farrell – while they are looking at goalkeepers, full-backs, centre-backs and wingers.
The new season begins in six weeks on the weekend of August 7-9 then the window closes on September 1.
