A DEDICATED karate coach has had his efforts recognised with a Proud of Barnsley nomination.

It’s safe to say that karate has always been a huge part of Paul Barradell’s life.

Paul kickstarted his club, PB Karate and became a full-time karate instructor after the Covid-19 pandemic.

With the support of his wife, Paul gave up his job working at a glassworks and hasn’t looked back since.

He runs daily classes at Honeywell Sports Centre, including classes for children, adults and free self-defence sessions for ladies.

Paul explained that the inspiration for these extra sessions came from parents of youngsters who attend his club wanting a go - but felt hesitant about joining mixed classes and feeling low in confidence.

The karate coach admitted that the class had humble beginnings, but now has ten dedicated members who have grown their skills and confidence.

Paul’s kind and patient attitude towards teaching karate has won over his students, their parents and the wider community.

Abby Raynor, mum of one of Paul’s students said: “Paul has devoted countless years to teaching karate, but what he provides goes far beyond martial arts.

“I have experienced Paul’s dedication firsthand.

“My son, joined PB Karate when he was just five years old and the difference it has made to him has been incredible.

“He has grown in confidence immensely, developed discipline and resilience, and, perhaps most importantly, made friends for life.

“Watching him flourish both on and off the mats has been one of the greatest rewards as a parent.

“Paul’s influence doesn’t stop with the children.

“Inspired by everything I had seen, I joined the club myself as an adult.

“Through PB Karate I have learned valuable self-defence skills, improved my fitness and mental wellbeing.

“Paul gives up an extraordinary amount of his own time to ensure every member has the opportunity to succeed.

“The club has become much more than somewhere to train.

“It is a community where everyone is welcomed, encouraged and supported regardless of age or ability.”

Paul added: “We do yearly sponsored fundraisers and the money is split equally between Barnsley charities and going back into the club.

“We’re also providing first aid certifications for children aged six to 14, which is really important.

“I am very honoured to be nominated but I really have had the best couple of years working with my children and para squad.”
