AN ANIMAL charity has written to thank Chronicle readers for their donations which have helped pay for operations on a retired guide dog from Birdwell.

Guide Dogs addressed the letter to the Chronicle following a flood of contributions.

Money was given after an appeal from partially-sighted Julie Evans whose retired guide dog Flick needed surgery on her back legs.

The letter reads: "It's only through the support of people like you that means we're able to maintain our lifelong commitment to blind and partially-sighted people in your community. The guide dog service relies purely on voluntary income which is why we are so grateful for your generosity."

Judith, 35, of Worsbrough Road, who also has a new guide dog, Poppy, raised more than £1,000 for the Nottingham-based charity.

She said ten-year-old Flick still has physiotherapy and hydro treatment, which involves walking on a treadmill in water to strengthen muscle, every other week.

"She's a lot better in herself but she thinks she can more than she's allowed to," said Judith.

Dogs used by the charity are treated as guide dogs from the day they are born until they die.
