Pogmoor residents fed up with dog fouling in their park have taken steps to flag up the problem - literally.

At a residents' association meeting last week, member Marlene Crossland suggested putting bright pink flags in the dog mess to highlight the issue.

"I think the colour is important," she said.

"It says we are not angry, it just says it's your field as well and we want it to be nice for everybody."

Marlene said she got the idea for the silent protest after watching a programme on television. The flags, she said would act as a visual deterrent to dog walkers, encouraging them to pick up their poop.

Group members and residents at the meeting backed the idea on Thursday.

Last year the association was given £2,500 from the government's Community First Panel to create the park on a piece of wasteland off West Road.

During the Second World War, a bomber plane crashed on the site and the association is hoping to create a wildflower meadow and community orchard there.

Last week, pupils from Horizon Community College planted 210 trees donated by the Woodlands Trust and in autumn, 6,000 bulbs were planted by local schoolchildren.

"Hopefully it will make people see how much dog poo is there," Marlene added.

"We will need hundreds of flags because there is so much dog poo and it's such a shame because the park is so lovely."
