TV chefs the Hairy Bikers turned their hands to something different when they visited Elsecar to see the Newcomen beam engine.

The pair, Dave Myers and Simon King, were filming at the heritage centre as part of a new three-part documentary about the country's industrial heritage.

They highlighted the work that was being carried out on the beam engine, which is the only one to remain in its original location, and was built in 1795 to extract water from Elsecar New Colliery.

Dave said: "If it was a painting, people would be saying it's so important and we think the same about this.

"It's great there's something as good as this right on your doorstep."

Dave and Si spent two days filming in Elsecar and also took time out to talk to the crowds who turned out to meet them.

Si said: "We've always been fascinated by the heritage in the UK and we think it's enormously important.

"It's been going for a very long time and it would be nice if we could get it working again."

Dave added: "It's nice to get our hands dirty with oil and dirt rather than pastry for once."

Big crowds gathered at the centre to see the duo, who delayed their filming to have photos taken with members of the public.

As well as visiting Elsecar, the pair will visit Swindon, Mansfield and Liverpool as part of the show, to be broadcast on BBC Two.
