Barnsley FC were not the only relegation-threatened town team who gained a crucial win on Saturday afternoon. Barnsley RUFC scored six tries in a 38-15 win over Knottingley which meant the Shaw Laners moved off the bottom of the league and overtook their visitors.
"We needed to win on Saturday just like the football club did against Hull," said coach Mark Smith.
"It was a good weekend for both teams and hopefully we will both stay up. We are mirroring them."
Barnsley are still in danger as Knottingley could overtake them if they win their final game at home to Bridlington on May 11. Even if the Shaw Laners do finish second from bottom, they will still be in the relegation zone and will have to hope that they are saved by a planned restructuring of the league.
Man of the match Andrew Appleyard had a wonderful day on Saturday as he racked up 23 points including a hat-trick of tries. Knottingley took the lead through a drop goal but then one of their kicks was charged own by Barnsley's Josh Smith who then raced over for the first try.
Appleyard kick a fine conversion then scored his first try after good work by Craig Jeffels and Mikey Hayward. Appleyard converted the try then did so again after scoring his second following fine work by Andy Smith and Neil Robinson.
The Shaw Laners led 19-3 at the break but that lead was soon cut to 19-5 as Knottingley began the second half well. But Appleyard completed his treble and their were touchdowns for captain Dave Reed and Jeffels.
