An alcoholic who beat his former flatmate to death has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of murder.
John Sowden, 44, of Elm Road, Mexborough was convicted at Sheffield Crown Court of murdering Christopher Rooney.
He will serve a minimum of 15 years.
Mr Rooney, 44, was found dead at his home on Auckland Road, Mexborough, on September 2.
During the trial, the court was told how Sowden smashed a panel in Mr Rooney's front door before punching, kicking and stamping on him in the early hours.
Mr Rooney's body was not found until 1.30pm, when friend Melvin Clarke, called round to see how he was.
Pathology reports showed he had suffered extensive bruising, a fractured nose, jaw and ribs, a lacerated liver, a traumatic brain injury and his ear was partially detached.
Sowden later admitted manslaughter but denied murder on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
Prosecutor Simon Waley said that Sowden had heard voices threatening to harm him, and at the time of the killing he was hearing these voices but the jury found him guilty of murder.
