An asylum seeker with mental health problems is demonstrating that nothing can stop you if you want to serve your community.

Davoud Mogaddary of Springfield, Barnsley, is from Iran and is involved in many volunteer activities in the town.

He is a Barnsley Together delegate (Equality Forum) representing black and minority ethnic (BME) people in hate crime, faith and cultural groups as well as Barnsley College.

Davoud, 43, also helps out on community allotments and various art projects and has contributed to Healthwatch - a group acting as a voice for patients, carers and the public to improve health and social care services.

He has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award by fellow volunteer Roya Pourali from Wilthorpe Avenue, Barnsley.

Roya said: "Davoud needed just a little opportunity to shine and help other people in the community. He delivers art and craft sessions for people with mental health issues, and although English is not his first language, he is trying really hard to learn and improve."

Roya said Davoud was a good role model for other asylum seekers, demonstrating that no hurdle could stop him from being useful in society.

"He encourages other BME and asylum seekers to take part in different activities in Barnsley," said Roya.

"I have worked with a lot of asylum seekers over eight years but I have never seen someone like Davoud who is 100% committed and doing his best to serve the Barnsley community."

Roya added: "He is a fantastic example, and, given the chance, would do way more than he is already doing."

The Proud of Barnsley awards are now well underway, and attracting some outstanding stories of courage and commitment.

With 14 categories from Sports Team of the Year to Young Superstar, there is a spot to recognise anyone who is doing great things.

The awards dinner will also be a chance for winners to sparkle alongside host Shaun Dooley, Barnsley-born actor and TV star.  It takes place at the Holiday Inn, Dodworth, on Friday, November 15.
