A woman, thought to be a mum who had just dropped her daughter off at school, has been crushed to death under the wheels of a lorry at Stairfoot.
The woman, believed to be in her 30s, was crossing Grange Lane near the Black Bull pub when the accident happened at 9.05am yesterday.
Witnesses claimed she stepped in front of the truck which was moving at a crawl.
Taxi driver Stuart Hardman, 48, from Darfield, saw the incident.
"The traffic was stopped waiting for the lights at the roundabout and as the truck set off I saw the woman cross in front of it. She must have thought he was still stationary - he was only going less than walking pace.
"But then she went under the front wheels - maybe she was knocked off balance. The driver couldn't see her because his cab was so high."
Mr Hardman said people started screaming and cars were frenziedly beeping as they realised what was happening.
It is thought the woman worked at Lloyd's Pharmacy, Stairfoot and, shortly after the accident, the shop was closed and people could be seen hugging and crying outside.
Mr Hardman added: "I feel for the woman's family but I also feel for the truck driver. He was in bits and in tears."
An inquest is expected to be opened next week.
