Barnsley has raised the flag to mark the beginning of a week of events to recognise the work of the country's Armed Forces.

Servicemen and women, civic leaders and members of the public gathered at the war memorial outside the town hall on Monday as Barnsley raised the flag to mark a week of special events.

The Mayor, Coun Ken Richardson led the celebrations on the fourth annual Armed Forces Day.

Coun Richardson said: “This short but important flag-raising ceremony recognises the dedication of our servicemen and women and of the wider armed forces community of families, veterans and cadets.
