A couple returned to Darfield from Lincolnshire to renew their vows on their golden wedding anniversary.

Clive and Margaret Candlin, both 70, were married at All Saints' Church, Darfield, on July 20, 1963.

Both were in the army at the time and Clive wore his scarlet Coldstream Guards uniform and bearskin hat.

They renewed their vows on Saturday at the same time they were wed - 3pm.

Clive was born in Brampton but grew up in Darfield and met Margaret, from Edinburgh, at the Forces Club, London, in September 1962.

Margaret was stationed at the Military Postal Depot in the capital while Clive was posted to Wellington Barracks opposite Buckingham Palace.

Despite Margaret not turning up to their first date due to a broken shoe heel, Clive eventually proposed over the phone after one of Margaret's friends interrupted their call by asking when he was going to marry her.

Following the wedding, the two travelled to London so Margaret could be demobbed but, because 20 was considered too young at the time to qualify for married quarters, the couple moved in with Clive's parents on Bellbrooke Avenue.

Shortly after son Stephen's birth, however, Clive was posted to Aden, in southern Arabia, for 12 months.

Margaret spent six months in Scotland and six months in Darfield before moving into the couple's first home in Surrey before Clive's return in October 1965.

Daughter Tracy, who has travelled from Australia to attend the couple's golden wedding, was born in Chelsea Barracks, London, in November 1966, followed by younger son Clive in Germany in December 1969. The couple now have 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Clive would remain in the army for a further 31 years, eventually being commissioned as a sergeant major and rising to the rank of major.

He would then serve a further 16 years as a retired officer civil servant.

During that time, the couple have lived in a number of locations across the United Kingdom, Germany and Hong Kong.

Clive retired on the 47th anniversary of his joining the army, in 2008, and the couple moved to Kirkby Green in Lincolnshire.
