Candidates are being asked to come forward for a council by-election in Wombwell.
Polls open September 26, following the death of Coun Denise Wilde last month, and candidates are being asked to submit nomination papers no later than noon on Friday.
Candidates for Labour and UKIP have already begun campaigning, with former Kirk Balk teacher Robert Frost, 54, standing for Labour.
Robert, of Clarkes Croft, has lived in Wombwell for more than 25 years and was a miner before becoming a maths teacher.
He said he wanted to keep Wombwell a vibrant, safe place to live and work with a thriving High Street and well-maintained parks and play areas.
Former miner Neil Robinson, 73, of Windmill Court, is standing for UKIP and said he has been disappointed by Wombwell's Labour councillors, arguing more should have been done to keep Wombwell Baths and the town hall offices open.
He also pledged to give 25 per cent of any remuneration he would receive as a councillor to a local charity.
A briefing for all candidates and agents will be held on August 22 at 4.45pm in Committee Room one at Barnsley Town Hall.
The last date to register to be able to vote in the election is September 11. Residents can find out if they are registered to vote by calling the elections helpline on 773070.
