DO any of our readers know the whereabouts of the Guiler Cup?
It is a splendid cup well over 100 years old and at one time Mapplewell football teams competed for it.
In due course, its use took a different course when it was taken over by Mapplewell Horticultural Society and presented to the ‘best in show’ at their annual summer shows.
The history behind the cup is rather unique as in its early days it was deemed to be looked after by a ‘custodian’, a Mapplewell man. When he died, the cup passed down to his nearest male heir and he, in turn, took on the role of ‘custodian’.
Eighty-four-year-old Ken Turton said the last he heard of the cup was when his grandfather, Joseph Turton, was its custodian.
