A STAIRFOOT supermarket is to be partly powered by wind after plans for a turbine were given the go ahead.

Tesco has been given permission for a 13m high three bladed Gazelle wind turbine at its store on Wombwell Lane. The generator would produce 20 kilowatts of electricity and would be situated on the north west corner of the car park close to the canal.

A Tesco spokesman said the supermarket would be one of the first in the country to benefit from wind power.

The nearest houses with a view of the development are 150m away from the site and no letters of objection were lodged with the council.

Members of the planning board voted to approve the plans at a meeting earlier this month and the turbine could be operational early next year.
