A NOVICE sailor is preparing to circumnavigate the globe on a yacht.
Doug Armer, of Royston, has been selected to take part in the Clipper Round The World race, leaving Liverpool in September.
The finance consultant will spend ten months at sea despite his experience being confined to one training session.
The journey, covering 35,000 miles, will take him to places such as Brazil, South Africa, China and North America and Doug will be cooking, cleaning, carrying out repairs and sailing.
Doug said: “I’m doing this for so many reasons. I see it as a once in a lifetime opportunity, the chance to do something amazing and I hope that one day when my daughters are older they will look at what I did and be inspired by it.
“I think the biggest challenges will be the lack of sleep, the cold and not knowing what each day will bring. Overall, though, the whole race will be one big learning experience and self discovery.”
The Clipper Round the World Yacht race was established ten years ago by sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. He wanted amateur sailors to experience the adventure of ocean racing which previously was only enjoyed by the privileged and professional.
