A FIREMAN has been made an MBE in the New Year's honours in recognition of his charity work.

Richard Galliford, of Pengestone Road, Penistone, was founding secretary of Ghana Outlook and has been heavily involved in the charity for nine years. He has worked on projects in the African country which have led to:

• 2,000 children now get an education;

• Clean water has been provided for hundreds;

• Books and libraries provided to hundreds;

• Equipment and training provided for Ghana fire service.

Mr Galliford, 54, has been a fireman for more than 30 years. He has helped run Thurlstone junior football team, acted as a scout leader and as a volunteer driver for the Penistone Gate Club, run by Mencap.

"I was surprised and slightly embarrassed because nothing can be done on your own. For me to get this award it is a thank you to everybody I have worked with. "The nine years with Ghana Outlook has delivered much more than we ever thought possible. We have helped hundreds of poor and desperate people. We are proud of our record."

"The award stands as a testimony of the commitment of the charities and individuals involved in helping to improve conditions and bring education to those who are less fortunate."
