A ONE pound stake won a Barnsley mum more than £250,000 in a game of poker.
Anne Taylor was playing at a casino in Leeds on New Year’s Eve when she was dealt a royal flush — a ten jack, queen, king and ace of the same suit.
The hand is the best in poker and won Anne, of Shafton, the £258,982 jackpot which had been accumulating for three years. At first she did not even realise she had the winning hand.
“I just thought I had a ‘straight’ of ten, jack, queen, king and ace in different suits. I was going to put it down but then realised I could have a royal flush. “I looked at them again and realised they were all red and then I went through — heart, heart, heart.
“My heart was starting to beat 50 to the dozen.
“I had only been in Napoleons for quarter-of-an-hour so I was staggered. I had to keep checking the cards.
“When it was announced, everyone in the casino stood up and clapped and cheered. I had to go to the bar to steady my nerves.”
