MUMS and dads will have to find alternative childcare for their children following the shock closure of a Mapplewell nursery.

Directors of Hill Brow Day Nursery say they cannot compete with cheaper nurseries subsidised by the government.

The news has come as a blow to parents, one upset mum said it was totally unexpected as she thought the nursery was doing well.

She added: “I sent my son here because in my opinion it is the best nursery in the area.”

Hill Brow is owned by five doctors from the adjacent Hill Brow Surgery. In a statement they say: “The directors of the nursery have not, at any time, drawn any profits from the business and despite further substantial investments in 2005 and 2006, find that we are still making a loss of some £3,000 per month and have had to therefore make the very difficult decision to close the nursery.”

The council has been giving out Neighbourhood Nurseries Initiative money to existing and new nurseries in areas where child care provision is lacking.
