Sam Winnall scored a 30-yard screamer in the last minute to force a penalty shoot-out then missed his spot-kick as Barnsley crashed out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at Oldham Athletic on Tuesday night.
The hosts took the lead on 22 minutes through Dominic Poleon after the referee chose not to stop play for an apparent head injury to James Bree, who was not seriously injured. Oldham made it 2-0 a minute before half-time through former Sheffield United striker Danny Philliskirk.
Luke Berry halved the deficit eight minutes into the second half with his first Barnsley goal before Winnall's later stunner.
But Winnall hit the bar with his penalty and Kane Hemmings saw his saved as the Reds lost the shoot-out 4-2.
Danny Wilson made three changes from the team that won 1-0 at nearby Rochdale in League One on Saturday as Ryan Williams replaced Devante Cole on the wing and defenders Reece Brown and Joe Dudgeon came in for Martin Cranie and Peter Ramage.
Oldham were on top from the start as Poleon missed from eight yards with the goal gaping then forced a decent save out of Ross Turnbull after turning Brown. But it was third time lucky for the Latics midway through the first half as, with Bree down on the floor clutching his head, Conor Wilkinson burst down his flank and whipped in a low cross which Poleon tapped in. The Reds' defence and staff were furious but the goal stood.
Wilkinson almost made it two but fired wide when well-placed then the Reds were dealt a blow when the lively Williams limped off injured and was replaced by Cole.
Sam Winnall almost got the visitors back in it late in the first half when his sliced cross hit the inside of the post and bounced clear then he forced Paul Rachubka into his first save of the night. But it was Athletic who netted just before the break when Philliskirk ran onto a pass and fired in from the edge of the area.
Turnbull kept Barnsley in the game early in the second half when he denied Philliskirk following an error by Brown then blocked from Poleon who beat the offside trap.
Barnsley pulled one back out of nowhere as Berry fired into the bottom left corner with a stinging shot from the edge of the box after Keith Treacy's cross was cleared. Berry fired another chance over the bar then Hourihane and substitute Kane Hemmings crashed into each other when well-placed.
Winnall secured the shoot-out with a magnificent strike into the bottom right corner from 30 yards out. Hourihane and Abbott scored penalties and Turnbull saved one but misses from Hemmings and Winnall were crucial.
