A FORMER mechanic who spent three years building a replica of an RAF armoured car has sold it after falling from it twice and injuring himself.

Bill Hodgson, 64, had put his heart and soul - and most of his spare time - into recreating the Fordson Armoured car, which was used to fight German and Italian forces in the desert, in his garden.

But after banging his head and gashing his leg which resulted in scar, he decided to get rid.

"The reason I sold it was because I had been at a show and I fell off it twice and hurt myself. I was getting down and I just went. I missed the ladder altogether.

"I'm fine now, I think it's just old age. But my wife got worried and didn't want me to take it on my own anymore."

The vehicle used to be a dumper truck and Bill, of Darfield Road, Cudworth, used his retirement fund to build the car.

He took the finished product to a number of shows including Cleethorpes Army Day, the York Military Vehicle Trust Show, Yorkshire Wartime Experience, Cudworth Tea in the Park and a classic car show at Locke Park.
