ROTHERHAM will have its first specialist school in the humanities from September.

Pope Pius X Catholic High School, Wath, was given specialist school status in its high achieving subjects of English, History and RE.

The council said the school's location was another important factor in its award.

A report says: “As the school takes students from Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham it is uniquely placed to work with schools across the Dearne Valley.” Headteacher Anne Winfield said the school was delighted to be given the recognition. It achieved its best GCSE results ever last year with 59 percent of students achieving 5A*-C grades and 99 percent achieving 5A*-G.

But the school still had to raise £50,000 sponsorship to be granted special school status.
