A CAMPAIGN group has been set up in response to green belt in Mount Vernon being earmarked for 524 new homes.
The Mount Vernon Green Belt protection group formed after land between Upper Sheffield Road and Mount Vernon Road and a plot north of Kingwell Road was identified as suitable for 351 and 77 homes respectively in Barnsley Council's draft Local Plan.
Also earmarked as suitable for 96 homes is the hospital site off Mount Vernon Road.
The campaigners are concerned the sites will be 'destroyed forever' if they don't take a stand 'using all possible legal means' against the draft plan, which will be used by the council to guide development in the borough up to 2033.
