A 94-YEAR-OLD woman has made an impassioned plea to the council not to wipe out Barnsley's 'bit of God-given greenery' with housing and employment developments.

Hilda Stevens is urging Barnsley Council to bear the town's motto 'Spectemur Agendo' in mind - which translates as 'let us be judged by our acts' - when it comes to making decisions to allow greenspace to be used for development.

She made the emotional plea in a letter to the Chronicle, saying that while life may have had its ups and downs, she found solace for the 'rough bits' through unfettered access to the borough's beautiful countryside, something she's afraid future generations will not have the luxury of.

Her concern is prompted by the 'Barnsley West' masterplan revealed by house builder Strata and planning consultants Spawforths for land between Barugh Green, Pogmoor, Higham and Gawber.
