HOYLAND scouts are a step nearer to saving their crumbling old scout hut - after dreaming up fundraising ideas like a raffle with a prize of a supermarket trolley dash.

Mum Nicki Lee, whose son Rowan is in the 18th Barnsley (Hoyland) scouts, was lucky enough to scoop more than £300 worth of free shopping in the trolley dash at Hoyland Tesco.

Other scouts joined in at the store to help shoppers pack their bags and this brought in almost £190.

Scout leader Jamie Booth-Dobson said the scout hut on Market Street in Hoyland was 100 years old and had seen better days. It needed about £10,000 to fix it up.

He said: "The roof has sprung a few leaks and there is no emergency lighting so we're not allowed to have sleepovers there. A lot of pointing needs doing and some of the old windows are smashed. A major cost is likely to be hiring scaffolding."
