DEVELOPMENT of a village for autistic children and adults at Low Laithes will create up to 250 jobs. The 60-acre village, now under construction on the site of the former dairy farm, will house 30 people with autism or severe learning difficulties. As well as core staff, the village will provide jobs in care and vocational support, and principal David O’Connor said “the vast majority” will be recruited locally. Developers, the Hesley Group, run a larger village in Rossington, near Doncaster, and some staff who live in Barnsley may be transferred from there to the new centre. The group’s plans for the village were welcomed by the Ardsley Residents’ Association after a presentation this week.
