Luke Berry's last-minute equaliser secured Barnsley a 1-1 draw at home to ten man Peterborough United on Saturday.
The visitors took the lead early on after a mistake by Jack Cowgill, one of several youngsters in the Reds team. But, after Kgosi Nthle was sent off, Berry headed home in the fifth minute of added time.
Head coach Lee Johnson went with an extremely young team to give players experience with the realistic chances of getting into the play-off places having gone.
Cowgill, 18, came in for his first start while fellow academy graduates Mason Holgate and Paul Digby also returned to the starting line-up as did Berry and Milan Lalkovic.
Peter Ramage and Jabo Ibehre were left out of the squad while dropped to the bench were Ben Pearson, Declan John and club captain Martin Cranie.
Lewin Nyatanga took the armband and was joined in Barnsley's back four by 18-year-olds Holgate, Cowgill and Smith.
Cowgill's Oakwell career began poorly when he sliced a long ball straight to Conor Washington who was clean through and scored after 16 minutes.
Two minutes later, a misplaced pass from Holgate led to Harry Anderson going one-on-one with Adam Davies but the Barnsley goalkeeper made a good save.
The Reds came back into the game and should have levelled when their former goalkeeper Ben Alnwick came to head a long ball outside his box but missed it and Conor Hourihane shot wide of the empty net 25 yards out.
Barnsley began the second half as Hourihane fired just over then Sam Winnall hit the side netting with a header.
Nthle picked up his second yellow with 15 minutes to play then Berry headed in Hourihane's corner with almost the last action of the match.
