BARNSLEY has ruled itself out of the race to become a start or finish host for next year's Tour de Yorkshire race because it will be 'very costly'.

More than 20,000 turned out across the borough to cheer on elite riders such as Sir Bradley Wiggins and local talent Ed Clancy as the peloton swept through the heart of Barnsley.

Organisers are now looking for a new route for next year and organisers have begun discussions with local councils interested in holding a start or finish for the route.

Barnsley Council has decided not to bid to be a start or finish point due to the high costs - though it would like for town to be part of the route.
