New signing Michael Smith says he prefers playing in a front two and has been impressed with what he has seen of Sam Winnall.

Smith, 23, who describes himself as a mobile targetman, signed for Barnsley on Tuesday.

The deal is initially a loan but a fee has been agreed with Swindon for his transfer when the window re-opens in the new year.

The Geordie had been craving a move further north and revealed that he first spoke to Lee Johnson a month ago.

Now he's looking forward to concentrating on football with Barnsley and wants to hit it off on the pitch with Sam Winnall.

Smith told the Chronicle: "I watched the Everton game on television and I was really impressed with Sam and all the other lads and how they played against the big boys.

"I'm looking forward to playing up front with Sam and I do prefer playing with a partner. It might come naturally or with a bit of work. I'm sure we can work well together."
