Two first half strikes ensured Barnsley a 2-0 win over Gillingham at Oakwell.

Ben Pearson and Sam Winnall struck the decisive blows as Barnsley made it three games unbeaten in League One.

Lee Johnson selected the same starting line-up that earned a point at Blackpool the week before.

The only changes were on the bench with Dan Crowley overcoming a knock to push fellow loanee Joe Rothwell out of the squad.

Ryan Williams also missed out as he bids to overcome his groin issue.

Luke Norris flashed an early shot wide for the visitors, who have been a surprise package this season, after latching onto a loose pass from Reece Wabara.

Barnsley went ahead on 18 minutes when Josh Scowen's cross was cleared and ran kindly to Pearson who drove a shot into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Doug Loft fired a shot wide of goal in Gillingham's response.

Kadeem Harris came close to doubling Barnsley's lead. The loanee winger shoved Ryan Jackson off the ball fairly then powered an effort that had to be tipped wide spectacularly by 'keeper Stuart Nelson.

Barnsley did go in at the break two up after Marley Watkins chased down a long ball and played a perfect cut back to find Winnall ten yards out and he made no mistake.

A scrappy second half ensued with Gillingham threatening to get back in the game when sub Rory Donnelly fired over on the half volley.

Barnsley then denied the Gills efforts on goal with Wabara blocking bravely from Loft and the whole defence crowded out Cody McDonald and Josh Wright when they looked poised for shots on goal.

Donnelly then crossed for McDonald but his shot was kept out by Townsend who made a stunning stop with his legs.

A late header from sub Jake Hessenthaler bounced off the post as The Reds saw out five minutes of injury time.
