Reece Wabara expects to be booed when Barnsley visit the Keepmoat Stadium tomorrow for what he says is a 'must win' local derby.
The 23-year-old right-back was at Doncaster Rovers last season but, after turning down a new deal, he left in the summer and signed a short-term contract across South Yorkshire at Barnsley. Wabara told the Chronicle: "I am expecting a mixed reception, at best, but that is part of football and it won't bother me. I am definitely looking forward to the game and hopefully we will get another three points. It's a must win."
Despite the expected cold reception from the supporters, former England under 20 player Wabara has fond memories of his 65-game spell at Doncaster. He said: "I know most of the players very well so I am sure the Barnsley manager will be asking for my advice. I have a lot of respect for Doncaster but I am a Barnsley player now and I will be going there to win. They have some very good players and it will be a tough game but I am confident we can get the win."
Paul Dickov, who brought Wabara to Doncaster first on loan from Manchester City and then permanently last summer, was sacked earlier this season. Wabara said: "Paul was quite unfortunate. There were proposed takeovers which didn't go through in the last two seasons and that left him rushed and having to assemble a team quickly.
"But results didn't go to plan this season and it was a kneejerk reaction."
Wabara admits it was difficult to be thrown into the Barnsley first team during a period of two games per week at the start of the campaign after not having a pre-season as he was without a club. The former Walsall youngster said: "I am close to full fitness now which is great. We are gelling together very well as a team. Even in training there is a good vibe and togetherness. If we can keep that going and put together a good run, then it will stand us in good stead."
