Conor Hourihane redeemed himself for a penalty miss with a 95th-minute equaliser as Barnsley drew 1-1 at home to Sheffield United in their 12.15pm derby.
The Blades had a host of chances but only netted through Chris Basham's 16th-minute header. The Reds also came close with the penalty miss and efforts against the post and bar before Hourihane rescued a point and ended a four-match losing run in home league games.
Head coach Lee Johnson made four changes from the side that lost at Peterborough in midweek. Aidy White overcame his concussion to start while also coming back were Lewin Nyatanga, Sam Winnall and Reece Wabara. Kevin Long missed the match due to suspension while Ivan Toney, James Bree and George Smith dropped to the bench.
United began on top with former Red Matty Done hitting the side netting from eight yards out after 30 seconds then Dean Hammond having a header cleared off the line in the third minute. Barnsley came back into it with a Hourihane cross being headed just wide by Marley Watkins who later set up Winnall for a close-range shot which was saved before the rebound was scuffed wide by Lloyd Isgrove with the goal gaping five yards out.
It was the Blades who went ahead. After Adam Davies had denied Billy Sharp with a good one-on-one save, a right-sided Bob Harris corner went over the the Barnsley goalkeeper and was nodded home by Basham at the back post.
After those manic first 16 minutes, very little of note happened in the remainder of the first half but the Reds were booed off at the break after being second best.
Basham missed a glorious chance for 2-0 early in the second half when he fired wide 15 yards out after the goal opened up for him because Barnsley failed to clear a long ball.
The Reds were handed the perfect chance to draw level in the 59th minute when Adam Hammill was fouled by Neil Collins. But George Long dived to his right to tip Hourihane's low spot-kick around the post.
Instead of sparking the hosts into life, the Blades responded well after the missed penalty. Sharp shot straight at Davies from close range after a poor clearance by the goalkeeper then Paul Cutts fired over inside the box and White cleared off the line from Basham. Davies then produced a superb save to deny Done who was clean through after Nyatanga let a long ball go over his head.
Winnall almost levelled in the 80th minute when his flicked header from a left-wing cross hit the inside of the right post before bouncing out. Nyatanga's looping header from Hourihane's corner then landed on the bar.
Hourihane saved the day deep into injury-time when he smashed a superb shot into the bottom right corner from the edge of the box after a cross was cleared.
