WOODHEAD Pass could be made virtually redundant to trans-Pennine traffic, slashing traffic in the Penistone area, with an ambitious plan to create one of the longest road tunnels in Europe to link South Yorkshire and Manchester.

The route could carry trains as well as road traffic but it would be so long that psychologists will be consulted to assess the impact of the underground journey on drivers.

The government has carried out initial feasibility work on the scheme and has concluded that a tunnel system, costing £6billion, to carry both road and rail transport is technically possible, in engineering terms, and that the project is worth further investigation.
