A FORMER winner of the Young Apprentice from Barnsley is to receive a prestigious award from the Queen.

Ashleigh Porter-Exley has been selected to receive a Queen’s Young Leader Award for her work as an ambassador for apprenticeships and enterprising skills.

She is one of 60 young people from across the Commonwealth who are being recognised as exceptional leaders in their community.

Ashleigh, 20, of Brampton who won the TV competition in 2012, said: “It’s been absolutely fantastic for me since winning the Young Apprentice to be able to do all these things.

“I’m just a girl from a working-class family from Barnsley. Everything I’ve done has been down to a bit of drive and a bit of true Yorkshire grit. It proves to people that you don’t have to be an A* pupil and your parents don’t have to be loaded - you’ve just got to aim for what it is you want to do.”
