PIRATE taxi drivers who advertise their services on social media are the focus of a new campaign backed by the town’s cabbies.
Both Hackney carriage and private hire drivers in Barnsley have thrown their weight behind the campaign to highlight the dangers of getting a ride home from illegal taxis operating on social media web sites like Facebook.
The ‘Stay Safe’ campaign has been launched in the run up to Christmas, which is a peak time for the town’s taxi trade, with drivers showing their support by displaying the ‘who is driving you home’ stickersÊon their vehicles to drive the message home to punters.
The campaign came about after Barnsley Hackney Carriage Association approached Barnsley Council’s licensing team with the idea of delivering presentations about illegal taxis to secondary schools and colleges in the borough.
