THE world famous Jorvik Viking centre in York has been flooded but the local man responsible for creating the original Viking sculptures that can still be seen in the centre says not to worry- they are made of fibre glass and should be fine.
Jorvik, housed in a basement below Coppergate in York, ended up under about half-a-metre of water after this week’s floods.
Sarah Maltby, director of attractions for York Archaeological Trust, said trust members were devastated to find water leaking into the centre, which aims to recreate life in a typical Viking street.
Historic artefacts within the centre were moved off-site to a safe location but around half of the attraction was submerged.
The original Jorvik Viking figures were not only all all created in Barnsley by local sculptor Graham Ibbeson, he also based all the figures on his family and friends - many of them were regulars at the Wheatsheaf pub.
