A debut goal from loanee striker Ashley Fletcher ensured Barnsley earned a 1-1 draw against Fleetwood Town.

The Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Area final first leg was a cagey affair that the visitors arguably edged.

Second half substitute Fletcher powered in a header off the bar from Adam Hammill's perfect cross to rule out an Adam Davies own goal.

Aidy White, who signed on a permanent deal on Friday, retained his spot at left-back whilst Brad Abbott came in for Ben Pearson and Ryan Williams played behind Sam Winnall with Marley Watkins out with an ankle injury.

Barnsley had the first effort on goal when Lloyd Isgrove teed up Conor Hourihane from a corner. The ball bounced kindly to the Irishman but his half volley was cleared off the line.

At the other end, Davies had to push away an effort from Ashley Hunter while Bobby Grant curled one dangerously wide.

The visitors had a big chance to go in at the break but Antoni Sarcevic dragged wide after being put through by Jamie Proctor.

Barnsley almost went ahead in bizarre circumstances early in the second half when 'keeper Chris Maxwell misjudged a Hourihane corner and punched it against the woodwork.

Fleetwood then went ahead when Hunter's cross somehow got by Davies and trickled over the line.

But Barnsley ensured they will go to Highbury next month with all to play for when Fletcher's 73rd minute header ensured a draw.
