THE accident and emergency department at Barnsley Hospital could see a huge surge in the number of patients should the A and E in Huddersfield close.

Plans which could see Huddersfield lose its accident and emergency services to the Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax will go to public consulation.

It means people will travel to either Barnsley or Halifax when they need emergency treatment.

Though no final decision has been made, it could heap extra pressure on the A and E department at Barnsley.

Barnsley MP Dan Jarvis said the situation needed to be closely monitored.
