IT MAY lack some of the drama of the conventional game, but a ‘walking football’ team has been set up in Penistone to encourage those not quite up to the rough and tumble of the full-speed game to get some exercise.

The project is the brainchild of Penistone Church Football Club and early sessions have attracted a good turn out, with the ultimate objective to get together a team to play in the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Football Association league.

But for the moment Jamie Woodhouse is happy that the twice weekly sessions are providing a focus for locals who want to get out and take some exercise, within their physical limits.

The idea was aimed primarily at over 50s, but those with disabilities that prevent them from playing normal football are also involved.

The group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays for an hour, from 4pm - a timeslot chosen because of pressures on their ground from other teams.
