COUNCIL TAX in Barnsley is to rise by 3.9 per cent - the biggest rise in eight years - according to budget proposals due to be debated by councillors next week.

Ironically, it means Barnsley people will be paying 10.6 per cent more in council tax than they were when Gordon Brown was prime minister - despite years of government cuts which have seen council services reduced and the workforce slashed by half.

The average band D household will pay £1,295.25 for the coming year - a £48.62 increase on last year and works out at about 93p extra per week.
