SWORDS, knives, machetes and axes have been handed in to Barnsley police as part of a national amnesty.

The weapons were given up in the first week of the amnesty and police say it is good to get them off the street.

Insp David Owens said: “We've had some nasty-looking items handed in. These include a large number of sporting-type knives.

“What justification is there for owning one of these in South Yorkshire? “Folding and flick knives have also been surrendered. These are particularly dangerous because they are small and easy to carry hidden.”

Weapons can be deposited in special bins at every police station across the borough. As part of the campaign police are carrying out test purchasing.
