CAMPAIGNERS plan to assess every pub in Barnsley to identify those deemed to be at risk of closure so steps can be taken to protect them from redevelopment, it has emerged.
The Barnsley branch of CAMRA, the campaign for real ale, is increasingly concerned about the loss of pubs in the town, which are often regarded as attractive to developers because of the size of the plots they occupy.
Recent legal changes mean the organisation can apply to have them registered as an ‘asset of community value’ which gives legal protection allowing the community the first option to buy, should the property go onto the market.
CAMRA believes that could provide the window of opportunity to save some pubs which might otherwise be lost.
