A RUNNER is taking on the London Marathon to raise money for the air ambulance service which saved cousin Leah Washington’s life, the Barnsley teenager caught up in the Alton Towers smash.

Beckie Wrend, of Queen’s Road, Oakwell, isn’t going it alone on the mammoth 26.2mile run, she is teaming up with Jon Hall. Jon, 48, of Mysten Croft, Barnsley, is a friend of the Washington family.

The duo - nicknamed the Washy Warriors - are running to say thank you to the Midlands Air Ambulance team for the lifesaving operation its staff performed on Leah last June following the crash on the Smiler ride at the theme park.

The team used military trauma techniques to save the life of Leah. The accident resulted in the Gawber teenager having her leg amputated above her knee. She was on the ride with boyfriend Joe, whose kneecaps were shattered in the smash.
